I had the same experience earleir this year. I had a 2012 Mini Cooper with 50k miles on it. KBB dealer trade in was $6k, private sale $8k-10k. Carmax offered me $2k for the car. They showed me the KBB "instant offer" that was for $1.8k. I have since sold the vehicle in private sale. I would have taken $6k +/- from Carmax to sell it on the spot.
