This basically. I think they should've considered pushing harder on friend list groups and making it the default way to go, blending it into the UI and privacy options.
The functionality is there, just nobody really uses it.
I don't use Facebook because it's a collection of everyone I know, rather than a niche group of people I want to share particular ideas about particular topics with. You can create friends lists and open up particular albums and privacy settings only to them, but it's optional, not embedded into how you ought to use FB.
I didn't want my parents, ex or colleagues to see pictures of me and my girlfriend at the beach, which are for my friends. Or tag a friend in a meme about hating work when I've got colleagues in my profile.
At the same time, I don't want to think of these issues nor do I want to make lists to curate my content, particularly because some user groups overlap.
Instagram feels much more private even though it isn't always. You still get people in your friends list outside your close circle. But the difference is that they're usually your (age) peers and somewhat cluster around your 'lifestyle'. Facebook isn't like that, most people have everyone and anyone and I respond to that by zero-posting because I don't feel like thinking about everyone who sees this.
It's made worse to know that people (like me) lurk and that FB alerts everyone the moment I've said anything in a while.
