I've recently been thinking that Reddit holds a lot of potential that has yet to be tapped or expired. The recent pivots post CEO change (mobile app, redesign, crackdown on garbage) speak to a future where currently fractured private communities such as those on Discourse or Slack can find a more publicly accessible presence. Facebook Groups, while immensely popular, currently falls into the same opt-in, zero-discoverability category.
The timing couldn't be better with the hollowing-out of Tumblr.
- chipperyman573 8y ago>The timing couldn't be better with the hollowing-out of Tumblr. What happened? I haven't heard about this.
- beanboot 8y agoYeah I’d like to hear more about this “hollowing out.”
- hoffbrau99 8y agoWhat's Tumblr?
- agentdrtran 8y agorecent redesign massively increased ads and "recommended posts" as well as many users/communities being banned for being NSFW.
- falcon620 8y agoReddit is getting so much usage because it hasn't been monetized yet. At the moment it's quite good free user forum/board/discussion/community-style site. The new design will drive the users who liked that away. They will either eventually scatter away to hundreds of different places, or one or two new companies will take Reddit's current place.
- SquareWheel 8y agoMost users of reddit do not have accounts. Those users have already been using the redesign for some time.
- vishnu_ks 8y agoI don't think Steve is stupid enough to make the new design compulsory. He has mentioned hundreds of times how the redesign killed Digg. Old users would keep using Reddit by visiting old.reddit.com (or by opting out of redesign). They are not going anywhere.
- falcon620 8y agoI haven't seen an official statement for this yet. If he's planning to do that, great! Until then.. I'm thinking we're probably all migrating to a facebook-like experience soon.
- bruhbruhbruh 8y agoHere is a statement made by our VP of Product. Tldr: "old.reddit.com is not going away" https://www.reddit.com/r/beta/comments/8lv96l/feedback_please_dont_ever_remove_oldredditcom/dziwf1p/ https://www.reddit.com/r/beta/comments/8lv96l/feedback_pleas...
- tenryuu 8y agoFacebook also tending to restrict access to information behind a login. Compared to reddit, which most of its content is publicly visible. They are built on two very ideas though. The amount of times I have to ask someone on Facebook to get information for me is upsetting. To clarify, I'm banned from Facebook, not for being a dickhead though
- hateful 8y agoI agree with this. I've gotten tons of information from Reddit over the years, but have yet to create a user.
- igravious 8y agoIn the old days we used to call that excommunication. To be banned from your social network is to be excommunicated.
- NullPrefix 8y ago>To clarify, I'm banned from Facebook, not for being a dickhead though Could you, somehow, clarify that last part?
