  It's easy to say for us, but imagine a young man in love, dreaming about this wonderful future, with any things already arranged, and happy that the lady would accept his proposal. Maybe he planned to spend $1500 and he hears $2000. Breaking up at this point (frankly, you couldn't be together after withdrawing your proposal) might seem like petty ("Isn't your love fake then? Come on, it's just $500!") That said, I don't envy anyone being in such a situation. I see no easy way out.
