I remember reading people saying that insurance premiums will plummet for Teslas because of how much safer they will be on the road.
Today I read Tesla is getting into the insurance business because premiums are getting out of hand. It makes some sense since internally they’ll have more data they can use to deny claims.
It’s interesting how reality plays out.

- mikeash 8y agoI’m skeptical that it’s because premiums are getting out of hand. The report that Teslas are the most expensive to insure only looked at the top of the line version of each model. For the Model S they looked at the P100D, which costs something like $140,000, and is one of the fastest accelerating street cars ever made. I’m not surprised that’s expensive to insure, but that doesn’t mean a more mundane one will be.
- tim333 8y agoThey seem to have impressive repair costs. If I was an insurer I'd quote high because of that, not because they were more likely to crash. - carlivar 8y agoTo be fair, a major reason they are expensive to insure is because parts and labor are in low supply and high demand, thus high repair costs.
