- trhway 8y agoThey doesn't seem to build any 3D scene. Their radar doesn't seem to be sweeping in any axis, so it is good only for detection in narrow sector along the road surface. This is in particular was stated as the reason behind that case of driver being decapitated by driving under the road crossing semi truck. Their ultrasonic i'd suppose have similar fixed direction functionality and probably for much smaller distances.
- mentat 8y agoBinocular vision can do it just fine under most circumstances. Subaru Outback with Eye Sight is better than AP for this by far.
- etherael 8y agoWhy not? Isn't this the solution? I do remember hearing a while back that the cost for a lidar rig was around 5k, but given the fact it would save lives this seems like an obvious move?
- stevenwoo 8y agoMusk has stated publicly multiple times that he believes autonomous driving can be solved without LIDAR and directed the team at Tesla to not use it. https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/7/16988628/elon-musk-lidar-self-driving-car-tesla https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/7/16988628/elon-musk-lidar-s...
