Whether you have a good experience in the Fediverse depends primarily on you and your efforts. Make an account, fill out your profile, post an introduction with the "#introduction" hashtag, and follow/interact with interesting people who show up in the local and federated timelines. As long as you're not an asshole and don't expect others to bend over backwards to make you feel welcome, you'll probably be fine.
