Developing facebook social games..what should i know?

I am thinking of developing a social game on facebook. I wonder where to find developer type material for these type of games. It will be similar in vain to farmville. I know farmville is flash based, is it possible to develop such a game without flash? Are there any established methodologies for these types of games. I am hoping to keep the game simple and get it out ASAP.
