I was really surprised that this is the only comment mentioning the obvious. That will be 60% or more of the current revival. Additionally there are probably quite a few people who didn't know anything about Voxels, but transitioned the "pixelart" hype into the 3D world, coming to the same end point. I bet both these reasons together make 90% of the current interest.
