Kernighan also has a very well written book called Understand the Digital World, which is an introductions to computer and network technology for a non-technical person. It touches on binary, assembly language, and a few higher level programming languages while emphasizing the general idea of what a computer can and cannot do. It also includes very up to date discussions of how networks work (at a high level) and online privacy and, encryption and security. His ability to explain highly technical concepts to someone with no assumed computing background in concise and lucid prose is really impressive.
