Ask HN: Lack of Heroku DB access - limiting?

I'm evaluating hosting alternatives and like Heroku. Unfortunately, they don't have direct DB client access to their PosgreSQl setup. Does anyone find this limiting? Are there any recommendations case an emergency DB interaction is required?
