Yeah, the strategy seems smarter to me. Make a niche product that offers something that no other product on the market currently does but that some people really want. The Essential didn't appear to do that to me: it looked like just another high end Android phone of which there are already plenty to choose from from more established brands and didn't have anything that made it stand out as better than those other options.
