The one thing I spent years teaching my wife is that when there’s anything untoward on the highway, JUST STOP. I’ve avoided at least two major accidents by stopping instead of swerving — in a few feet you can get your speed down to levels where a crash won’t be fatal or severely injurious. And even if you get rear ended by stopping short, it’s usually at a much lower speed. All autonomous cars should just STOP when something is not right.
