Obviously what happened to her is disgusting and terrible. It has no place in this industry or society.
But its remarkable to see this posted to HN. Google’s culture is all sorts of peculiar to me - people quit Amazon all the time, and Im sure many quit for similar abuse as well, but we dont see the letters posted to HN. Maybe its because Amazon is not considered “elite” or exclusive enough now, who knows.
The idea of “bringing your whole self to work” is honestly bizarre. I might be old fashioned but I think the workplace is the worst place to have a culture war. Perhaps its similar to how the culture wars at the Ivies/elite schools receive outsize media coverage compared to less prestigious schools that ultimately focus more on research and education.
- guessmyname 8y agoI think these letters (from an ex-Google employee, for example) reach the top of HN just because they are somehow famous among a selected group of people with enough points in their accounts that, after upvoting the submission, it gets exposed to many readers like us. I have been reading a lot of "letters" from Amazon employees here [1] so it's not so rare, just that publishing a rant about your employment with a big company will affect your future in a good or bad way depending on what you write.
