I don’t think the poster you’re replying to missed the author’s position; I think they were just pointing out that it generalizes poorly, since the “savings” all pretty much came from that single source, which few other people share. As the author said: their other car held its value. If he’d had 2x of that car rather than a BMW, the results would look wildly different. Most folks don’t have that situation.
