Dang, Its going to be really tough to ignore China. Especially on Hacker news.
I've recently read a book The China Dream: Great Power Thinking and Strategic Posture in the Post-American Era by the Chinese general Liu Mingfu and the country is by admission not a proponent of Human rights (but rather "Peace" and "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics")
Last year China VC funding grew tremendously [1]. China will surpass the US GDP in 15-20 years [2] or so (if not less), and dealing with China is difficult in the technology industry. Google, Facebook, the YC backed Airbnb [3], Uber and many more US companies have tried to enter the market with difficulty.
I understand nationalism is a problem especially in the Trump era but this issue will be with us for the foreseeable future and the tech community has a special responsibility to ensure the universal values of Human Rights are defended.

- dang 8y agoYou can avoid flamewars without ignoring China.
- amygdyl 8y agodang, genuine question: will inadvertently starting a flame war be censured? Also, I can't help but ask, I don't know if I'm hellbanned or however it may be I don't see my comments except in my profile- I wish only to ask, if I am censured following a recent comment that was repeatedly modded down, including after surgery substantiation of proof of my premise that my comment exclusively conveyed, may I seek your personal assessment of my concern? This was the exchange: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16514358 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16514358 I wrote one more comment above, that I think was the perceived problem, in which I simply said that there's no defense of entrapment in the UK. This I believe proved contentious, in fact I gave up that affordance in my clarification, pointing to the fact that my statement arose from case law precedent, not statutes. In the UK for some time now, even reliance on the legal profession in the lower end of criminal law, is a serious risk. Resources are so taxed, I own better books than most barristers, themselves less now a step above solicitors, all earning frighteningly low salaries, a comparable plight with the untenured teaching staff at American universities. Our criminal law situation in the UK is beyond description. I consider myself only socially responsible for maintaining a current reference library, so often have I been able to save friends and acquaintances from terrifying potential escalation of circumstances. Knowing what Lord Justice Reed said of strict liability, could be invaluable to sustaining the freedom of almost any man involved in acrimonious divorce. I don't desire to profile, but the statistical likelihood of a HN reader being on the Aspergers Spectrum, only adds to the potential advantage of this knowledge. Strict liability is the concept of unwavering guilt by action, which is the test every kind of domestic dispute restraining order has applied by statute- Lord Justice Reed said that when reading any statutory strict liability clause you are to prepend thereto the condition of Mens Rea (criminal forethought and capacity of malicious decision making) "as if it were written in the text of the law". Almost no practising lawyers in the UK know the above, despite being reported in Blackstone's Criminal Practice since the 2010 edition at least (first I owned). This means that a entire category of summary convictions may be unsafe. Since I founded my company, I am my own reference, buy learning the above the hard way, despite having heard the reassuring opening words of a senior judge, "We should never have been in this court.." cost my way of life and world. I am actively seeking to discover acceptable means to actively recruit others like myself whose careers have been similarly harmed. I can't imagine how a less well positioned individual than I , could have coped. If I earned my censure by other means than my statement about UK law, I have no argument whatsoever. I have been badly affected by a smorgasbord of (non opiate nonetheless addictive I learned from late advice) painkillers for various injuries, and was far below that standard of cohesion I find acceptable to myself.
