This can't happen quite as easily with music that's still under copyright. Interestingly I find myself wondering whether stronger copyright protection -- something for which I usually don't have a whole lot of sympathy -- would at least introduce a little friction into the music appropriation machine. Also I'm wondering what cultural associations today's music will have, far in the future after its copyrights have expired.
