This is not exclusive to Asia. I know more individuals whom have found success doing this than attempting to sell software which is the result of a one-off idea. It might seem rare in the States, but only because 1) the entrepreneurs heading these ventures do not want to give away profitable niches in the market and 2) they are not as fun to talk about as startups with lofty billion dollar goals.
