I still am against hiding the protocol. Color https green and http red if you want to (though I think http deserves a less condemnatory color like yellow). Hiding it, unhiding it, is too much magic. Yes, I believe web users need a certain level of technical understanding, so that they are savvy enough when they see it elsewhere, like in an email or some other document. I am for hiding the inner workings of things, but I believe the URL is part of the user interface.
