A better reason not to fear the singularity is because it a science fiction concept that's connections to the real world are tenuous at best. Anyways, I think the fear most people have is either that the AI would be far better at doing these bad things to humans than humans are (which you allude to in your comment), or they always envision themselves on the "good guys" side in human vs human conflict and don't have that comfort when it comes to AI vs human conflict. Those fears seem valid to me if you believe in the underlying premise.
