Dutch police seize servers of MaxiDed, a provider known for hosting malware ops
- chatmasta 8y agoThere sure are a lot of Eastern European hackers arrested in Thailand. Is there something about Thailand that makes it easier for international police forces to arrest people there?
- ryanlol 8y agoThailand is just a popular destination for Russians, thought by some to be a safer destination than EU. In practice this is probably not the case given how easy it is to move around EU without an ID.
- jaclaz 8y agoAlso, unless you dwell only around the "tourist areas" (which are I believe tightly controlled by the Thai Police for security/antiterrorism reasons) it is a tad bit difficult to not stand out (in more rural areas) as "The Guy From Europe", particularly if you speak no Thai and are tall, fair haired and with blue eyes as an Eastern European is likely to be.
- orbital-decay 8y agoNot just Russians, but (mostly) remote IT workers from exUSSR countries. Certain Thailand regions are full of Russian-speaking expats and freelancers. Not sure about safety reasons, AFAIK Thailand was a popular idea of "remote working heaven" among them some time ago.
- pjc50 8y agoIt does have an extradition treaty with the US, perhaps people have forgotten this. It also has a reputation for both "digital nomads" and sex tourism.
- moltar 8y agoI think it’s a perception of Thailand being so corrupt and inefficient. It’s easy to think that you’ll “get lost” in the country. But I guess police are more effective than they appear.
- VMG 8y agoPolice probably responds to monetary incentives from all sides
- Cthulhu_ 8y agoIsn't it also because the weather is better and the cost of living is (much) lower? As in, with an average income you could live in a luxury holiday resort all the time? I'm mostly asking tbf, I'm wondering if a long vacation in thailand would work, financially speaking.
- draugadrotten 8y ago> I'm wondering if a long vacation in thailand would work, financially speaking. It all depends on your requirements. If all you want is beer, sea and sunshine, then you can get by on a few dollars per day. I would guess about 5 dollars would suffice if you stay away from tourist areas. If you want to live in a 5-star resort or better, then your spending level is more like a few hundred dollars per day. Anything in between is possible. I typically spend about 20% per day when on vacation in Thailand vs Europe and I don't pinch pennies.
- Dolores12 8y agoThailand is very liberal with their visas. Actually you don't need any to enter Thailand. You get 30-days stamp in airport on arrival which you can prolong for another 30 days by doing border run.
