- ebj73 8y agoI was thinking the same, but I think it's mainly for prototyping. You have a design that will eventually end up inside a window frame, and you want to show how it might look, before it's actually implemented. I hope that's the purpose.
- oneeyedpigeon 8y agoI think just putting it in context is the key part. Many products adopt this kind of style for their screenshots (see sublimetext [1], for example). TBH, in that case, I think it's most useful when they accurately reflect reality so you can understand whether it's a native app versus a web app, or whether it's a mac app or a windows app, etc. Still, even just an indicator that 'this is a screenshot' is a useful design element, even if it might already seem as obvious as can be.
