Another "cost" of living in the Valley, of which I am curious, is the fact that you're in an echo chamber. There are things which would only work in the Bay Area (just as there are things that only work in NYC or LA), which can't scale down to the mass consumer market (if that's your interest). I am currently very actively wondering if the access to all those smart people is worth risking the potential loss of perspective. (I wouldn't have to try and build a design community out there, I could just work and network.)
