The design has nothing to do with it. They simply grossly mismanaged the entire logistics and manufacturing part of the business. They hired way too many way too fast, they ignored the advice of generations of car manufacturers (particularly in regard to automation), they expanded their supplier base (and all the bloat that goes with it) way too fast, etc. During all that, they paid merely average, they worked their employees into the ground, they wasted an incredible amount of cash, they ignored significant problems with their automatic driving capability, etc.
Why? It's wasn't because Elon was dicking around with design details, it was hubris.
Keep in mind, this is a company that is _fifteen years old_ now, and still has huge trouble in their bread and butter, manufacturing and logistics. These are all issues that should have been sorted out 5+ years ago _before_ they built out at break-neck speed. But, hey, Elon and the other leaders thought they were smarter than everyone. They thought they, unlike every other car company in history, could just wing it.
