Just don't touch system76. They're just low quality rebranded Sager laptops with a crap version on Linux. You can just buy the same laptop and if you really like their horrible version of Linux, then put that on there.

- craftyguy 8y agoAlternatively, there's Purism (https://puri.sm https://puri.sm), who actually take security and build quality seriously. Edit: looks like the system76 downvote brigade is hitting this discussion.
- jimnotgym 8y agoThe cheapest Purism seems to be $300 more than the cheapest System76. Is the purpose of your comment to say that more expensive laptops are better?
- monochromatic 8y agoIs that a controversial idea, that more expensive things are often better?
- yjftsjthsd-h 8y agoI might not phrase it that way, but notice that it's not exactly a one-to-one correlation. Given, y'know, that we are busy discussing hardware to run Linux... Which is free in both senses. It's a stronger correlation in hardware, but still imperfect; one brand being higher quality than another while undercutting them by a couple hundred dollars wouldn't shock me.
- craftyguy 8y ago> Is the purpose of your comment to say that more expensive laptops are better? Uh, no. The purpose of my comment is to point out there's a company that builds and sells Linux laptops that are of higher quality. They've put in a lot of work to support Coreboot, disable ME, and have a working TPM. They are trying to reduce their dependence on non-free software. It's a coincidence that in this case you 'get what you pay for'.
- driverdan 8y agoUnfortunately they only offer lower res screens.
- busterarm 8y ago> looks like the system76 downvote brigade is hitting this discussion. Tbh, I'm fairly convinced and have been for some time now that someone involved with that group is part of a voting ring on HN.
- vec 8y agoAs far as I know, the only three System76 employees who are active on HN are myself, jackpot51, and cassidyjames.
- sbov 8y agoI considered purism in my most recent laptop hunt, but with 4 core laptops going mainstream in Intel's latest update I couldn't justify it.
- AdmiralAsshat 8y agoIn theory, if both Purism and System76 upstream their work towards open hardware and in neutralizing the IntelME, the work should benefit everyone.
- slededit 8y agoThe Linux community really does eat its own. For a long time the question was - when will there be a Linux supporting laptop. Now a company comes and does it and the complaint is they aren't bespoke enough.
- twblalock 8y agoThis particular complaint is that they are just rebranding OEM hardware, so you might as well just buy the OEM hardware.
- jackpot51 8y agoThe OEM hardware does not have our custom firmware, our WiFi and drive selection, our testing, or our support. Those things may not all be perfect, but they do make a big difference.
- busterarm 8y agoAren't you the same fellow who suggested to me a few months ago that Redox was a realistic, superior alternative to running OpenBSD in production?
- jackpot51 8y agoI never said anything of the sort, and would be surprised if you could provide any evidence of this. Redox is not ready for production and I am not hesitant to admit so.
- rossdavidh 8y agoMy main laptop is a System76 "Lemur" (economy model) that I've had for a couple years now, and it's served me well, for programming or otherwise.
