I think that’s the point. Governments would prefer cash just didn’t exist.

  Interestingly, governments also make money on cash existing; every moment's inflation that isn't realized by that cash is money in the government's pocket.

    They will, of course, make their seinorage whether they are physical notes/coins, or added to the money supply via some bits on a disk.
