In my opinion, seeing that nobody actually understands the fundamentals of why the techniques used in ML/AI seem to work, it matters less that a researcher is not armed in the practice of complex mathematics. I suppose there is a use for precisely describing things that we do not actually understand, but I don't think it is a pre-requisite, at this early infant stage in ML/AI.
