Good point. I emailed an article author at a respected paper (WaPo?) noting this, and his reply was basically, "I didn't write the headline." I'm somewhat sympathetic, but it did sound a bit like "I was just following orders."
If journalism is to survive as a respected discipline, this sort of thing needs to be purged.
- kup0 8y agoIt is true that they often have headline writers. But the idea of having someone separately manufacture a headline that ignores the same level of rigor and standards that goes into a publication's reporting is a plague in the industry. A side effect of their reliance on ad-revenue for survival.
