The fake news epidemic is completely out of hand. A lot of journalism these days seems to be figuring out the best way to slant a story to produce the maximum amount of outrage.

Most articles I don't take issue with, it's the headlines which are purposely designed to bait clicks, even if the content below them is fine. There are exceptions to this, though. Many journalism entities these days try to summarize and provide commentary on scientific studies. Often these summaries (and ESPECIALLY again, the headlines) end up being very off-base. It definitely does us a disservice.
- modbait 8y agoGood point. I emailed an article author at a respected paper (WaPo?) noting this, and his reply was basically, "I didn't write the headline." I'm somewhat sympathetic, but it did sound a bit like "I was just following orders." If journalism is to survive as a respected discipline, this sort of thing needs to be purged.
- kup0 8y agoIt is true that they often have headline writers. But the idea of having someone separately manufacture a headline that ignores the same level of rigor and standards that goes into a publication's reporting is a plague in the industry. A side effect of their reliance on ad-revenue for survival.
