Is there precedent for telling a company who's ads they must show?
- chrisco255 9y agoYeah, it happens in political advertising in particular. You can't deny one or the other party's ads.
- GeneralMayhem 9y agoBut surely you can choose not to show political ads at all, which would be the parallel situation?
- magicalist 9y agoOnly in broadcast because the FCC licenses the spectrum to them and the supreme court has found that part of the first amendment is that the government has an interest in fostering political discourse. Applying the equal opportunity rules to advertising networks in general would be the legal battle of a lifetime. Applying them for commercial ads is never going to happen.
- SlowRobotAhead 9y agoInteresting that the internet is broadcast sometimes and not other times then.
- magicalist 9y agoBroadcast as in companies that are FCC licensees to use spectrum, so they're able to have more restrictions placed on them than the first amendment would usually allow.
