If one comes in while I'm in the zone, I can assess it without losing flow because I know I've got a break coming up soon, and so I only have to decide if the incoming message is so important it can't wait for the break. I get those notifications on my phone, so I just keep my phone face up next to my computer, so I can easily glance at the notifications, but I'm less tempted to respond.
