In the new spirit of 'liberalism', or the tumblr version of it, mentioning a traumatic event is as bad as causing the traumatic event. You can't mention rape because it might trigger someone, it doesn't matter if you are excusing it, or demanding harsher punishments for it.
Unless you've been on a collage campus in the last 10 years you don't know how insane the movement is. Calling it 'liberal' is complete wrong because it is illiberal in the extreme and makes people take the side of authoritarians who want to remove all wrong think from the world.

- geofft 8y agoI've been on a college campus within the last 10 years and I can only assume the people who genuinely think this either haven't or have their careers depend on pretending it's true (e.g. Turning Point USA).
- zeth___ 8y agoThen you're either willfully blind, or extremely lucky. My alma mater allows talks about helping tweens transition to their preferred gender, but banned a talked by a "pickup artist" in the last 18 months. Last Thursday I looked up a dissertation from the graduate library for work and they had a sticker on every door un-ironically using "lgbtqia+ and allies". Here's another one that does the same: https://lgbtqia.ucdavis.edu/educated/glossary.html https://lgbtqia.ucdavis.edu/educated/glossary.html
- geofft 8y agoI'm not sure how any of this supports the point you're making (I believe the point you're making is "mentioning a traumatic event is as bad as causing the traumatic event" and/or "[these people are] authoritarians who want to remove all wrong think from the world"). If the point you're making is "I don't believe the concept of LGBTQIA+ and allies should exist," then yes, there would appear to be authoritarians who want to remove all wrong think from the world....
- zeth___ 8y agoI find it disturbing that an otherwise intelligent sounding person regresses to the reading level of an 8 year old when confronted with dissonant information. Let me explain again, and do try to read this time. We have two events both of which the general public would find distasteful: one advocated treating women like objects, the other advocated tweens should undergo irreversible medical procedures that have at best dubious health outcomes. One was banned, one wasn't. This is a problem. Further the climate of the university is one that until recently was used as used as a straw-man to make fun of conservatives, "no one calls it lgbtqia+, you're just being disingenuous" was a reply I have received on reddit as little as 6 months ago. You're welcome to slander me again if the above is too difficult to wrap your head around though.

- geofft 8y agoYes - my apologies, I'll disengage faster in the future.
