Ask HN: Crossing over from IT to Engineering?

Worked in IT for most of my 20s,finally getting myself to take a proper college degree. I am split between taking a compsci or Infosec path. I wanted to see if any engineers here have made a transition like this and also what the industry desires or requires from someone like myself? I want to know if I even have what it takes to pursue a SDE career (as in what employers want). I love coding, wouldn't consider myself exceptional and I have no 'professional' coding experience.
