If it were me, I'd want to know what % of manufactured goods consumed globally[0] were manufactured in the US over time. If that % has dramatically dropped over the last, oh, 50 years, I'd say we've exported our manufacturing, regardless of automation. [0] Semi equipment, earth moving equipment, networking equipment, aircraft,... a lot of big, expensive stuff made in the US gets exported, wouldn't want to leave that out of the picture.
