Knight not only pioneered this "next great computing platform," he also pioneered the current one: Knight was involved in early ARPANET work, Lisp Machines (MIT was the second organization after PARC to build networked personal workstations), and massively parallel SIMD (ie GPU) work on the Connection Machine.
