Asl HN: What is your theory for why every 'Facebook killer' has fallen short?
Facebook seems to be playing chess while the others are playing checkers.
- falcongod082 8y agoWhen you have a de-facto monopoly, checkers looks like chess.
- krapp 8y agoNetwork effect, and most Facebook users actually being more or less OK with it as a service.
- ddtaylor 8y agoTo "kill" Facebook we need a decentralized protocol for sharing information that keeps data private, which is somewhat of a contradiction.
- johncoltrane 8y ago$ESTABLISHED_BRAND killers are announced and discussed about in tech/fin circles which are completely irrelevant. My wife, the kids at my son's middle school, their aunts… no one cares about any of the things us tech-y people care about.
- CM30 8y agoBecause they fail to provide a convincing reason for non technical people/average Joes to switch over. Yes decentralisation is good, yes privacy is good, but on their own they're not really selling points for a lot of people, and nor is 'allows more freedom of speech than $MAJOR_BRAND'. Most fail because they don't succeed on at least one of the following things: 1. A system selling feature that Facebook doesn't/can't offer 2. A decent UI/UX 3. An audience large enough to contain at least some of the user's friends/acquaintances
- mindcrime 8y agoThey haven't been better enough to prompt a critical mass of users to jump ship.
