Maybe the x is an order of magnitude smaller or more. I don't truly know, but whenever I see COBOL code it's verbose.

  Probably smaller. Modern COBOL isn't nearly as verbose as classic.

    But wouldn't most of the code in service be classic COBOL?

      If you keep your toolchain up to date, I'd assume you'd be able to at least update each unit to more modern syntax as you go along.
