I describe this as “people using puns to call attention to themselves to the detriment of the conversation.” Wordplay is cool, but when one demands everyone’s acknowledgement by stopping the flow of conversation to interject “Pun [not] intended” or “did you see what I did there” it disrespects everyone present. I think people would do this less if they realized this behavior is the cousin of the person who has to top every story or add the time it happened to them to every discussion.
