That’s a surprisingly weak and imo damning response.
The primary car evaluated by Munro was built in 2017. We have significantly refined our production processes since then, and while there’s always room for improvement, our data already shows that Model 3 quality is rapidly getting better.
So can people who bought your alpha/beta iterations trade in for version 1.0? Treating a huge material purchase such as a car like a software product is guaranteed to get you into trouble.
- njarboe 8y agoThe first few thousands of cars generally go to employees and investors. I don't think anyone buying a new model Tesla in the first year has any illusions about the fact that the car will have many more problems than one a few years into production. What I am hoping is that Tesla models won't have to change dramatically to stay up-to-date and that slow iteration on the vehicles over the years allows for million mile versions to be eventually produced.
- infogulch 8y agoThe first year of a new car design of any model of any brand having qc problems is actually so common that sometimes buyers will actively avoid them. Tesla buyers know what they're getting into, they've seen the issues model X has gone though. This is completely normal.
- dbasedweeb 8y agoI’d be fascinated if you could find three examples of panel gaps needing 40% improvement over one year from a major manufacturer.
- greglindahl 8y agoIt would be interesting to know the number for brand new, high-volume assembly lines. Tesla has a much bigger problem than an existing carmaker bringing out a new model on an existing assembly line.
- dbasedweeb 8y agoMaybe, but since I was responding to, The first year of a new car design of any model of any brand having qc problems is actually so common that sometimes buyers will actively avoid them... it doesn’t actually apply here.
- greglindahl 8y agoAh. Well, brand new assembly lines being more difficult totally applies in the real world, even if it doesn't apply to the sub-sub-sub discussion you were having.
- dbasedweeb 8y agoSure, but it’s also a non sequitur in the conversation you decided to enter, and a point that was never up for debate or disagreement. Obvious, yet unhelpful in other words.
- greglindahl 8y agoSorry to intrude! I’ll be more careful in the future.
- 49bc 8y agoThey’re not talking about the mechanical operation of the car, it’s things like gap consistency between doors and the frames.

- boznz 8y agoElon Musk got car #1 and therefore by their reconning the shittiest one.. There's Karma in action.
- sowbug 8y agoYou are in the late majority or laggards automobile-consumer group, to use Crossing the Chasm terminology. There's nothing wrong with that. However, not everyone is in those groups.
- greglindahl 8y agoEarly S and X owners love their cars, and have an extremely high "I'd buy another Tesla" rating compared to other car owners in the same price ranges. Indeed, sounds like the person who you replied to shouldn't be an early 3 buyer.
