Shorebirds, the World’s Greatest Travelers, Face Extinction
- microcolonel 9y agoNot to sound glib or cynical, but if the incredibly limited scale of human development in Northwest Australia is a crucial break in the migration chain of these birds, it seems pretty hard to imagine enough tenderness and care could be exercised to save them. Furthermore, aside from Australia, where along this path will you find anyone who will care enough about this cause to do something?
- carapace 9y agoYou do sound glib and cynical.
- microcolonel 9y agoI noted specifically that that was not the purpose of the statements.
- carapace 9y agoSorry, I don't mean to pick on you. It freaks me out that we seem to be facing a massive global ecological decline (not to say collapse), and I'm not sure what to do about it.

- xapata 9y ago> what to do about it Have a beer, relax, and don't have kids. If there's no next generation to worry about, the ethics of ignoring the coming disaster is much easier. > collapse Yes, there's a possibility. I'd give it about 1 in 100 cumulative over the century. In comparison, if I had those odds for an airplane crash, I would never fly.
- carapace 9y ago> Have a beer, relax, and don't have kids. If there's no next generation to worry about, the ethics of ignoring the coming disaster is much easier. I don't have kids and don't intend to, in large measure because of the ecological destruction and the obvious impending doom if we don't change our ways. But I can't ignore it. To me it seems like learning to live in harmony with Nature is one of the most important things we can do right now.

The next generation will descend almost entirely from people who thought it was still worth having kids.
- jessedhillon 9y agoSeems like you might only have skimmed a couple maps from the article.
