This has been big news in the UK for a while now.
The child is unfortunately seriously sick in such a way that he will never get better, and, from what I've read, doctors aren't sure exactly what is causing it.
He will never be able to eat, drink or breathe without assistance, and his brain is being destroyed by his illness.
His parents have been fighting to take him to a hospital in Rome (which has links to The Vatican) in order to try some experimental treatment.
They've made numerous appeals to as many courts in the UK and EU as they can, and have at every stage been told that keeping him alive amounts to cruelty and that his life support should be turned off.
So it's not a case of "evil government refuses to acknowledge parents' sovereignty over care of their child".
