I didn't feel welcome the few times I tried answering questions
- nurettin 9y agoLike you currently can't vote on HN?
- dang 9y ago(The GP comment has been edited in a way that makes some of the replies, like this one, make less sense.)
- ceejayoz 9y agoI'm kinda baffled by this complaint. [edit: OP has completely changed their post.] I'd think most new SO users are looking for help or a solution to a problem. Why was not being able to vote yet so upsetting you abandoned the resource?
- homero 9y agoI tried being part of the community
- ceejayoz 9y agoA user with zero rep can both ask and answer questions. Letting them vote seems like it'd quickly result in voting rings via a bunch of zero rep bot accounts.
- ceejayoz 9y agoPlease don't edit your posts to say something totally different without at least a note. It makes the people who reply to you look like lunatics.
- wvenable 9y agoI got a stackoverflow account once they stopped requiring you to link to a Facebook or Google account but I've never done anything with it. It's seems somewhat difficult to contribute if you're an expert. The site seems to be geared more towards newbies in design and the community is hostile to them. I suspect a lot of people who use Stackoverflow have now used it enough (grown up with it) that they don't have these kinds of problems anymore.
- kardos 9y agoI read OP's point as a new user might want to hit the vote in the "thanks, this solved my problem" sense, but gets a rather surly "your vote is denied until you demonstrate that you are worthy" response. Entirely a relevant criticism given that we're discussing SO hostility here. Edit: OP changed comment while I was writing this; leaving it anyway
- rudedogg 9y agoAlso, comments are prohibited for new users. I ran into this, and wanted to comment on answers I found (noting changes required for new versions of the language), etc., but couldn't. It basically caused me to not help other people for quite awhile until I could finally comment on other posts.
