Why not simply regulate it like gambling, instead of outright banning?
Are cosmetic item lootboxes affected too, and if so, why, if they're completely optional and offer no advantage? Are "lootboxes" that can be purchased with in-game resources affected as well, even when the game offers no option to purchase them for real money?
- dingo_bat 8y agoI guess gambling is illegal in Belgium.
- icebraining 8y agoNope, and in fact it's not even rare. Ladbrokes shops (for sports betting) are widespread, and casinos are not hard to find.
- anvandare 8y agoIt's illegal, but legal if licensed (quantum physics has nothing on legal systems) or on a temporary basis and small scale (town fairs, hobby club raffles, etc.). The main issue is that the games allow (and target) minors to play, which is never allowed, and that they do not provide any measures to protect players against themselves (such as maximum gambling limits).
- PeterStuer 8y agoIt is not 'illegal', but it is regulated. Hence the importance of them ruling those three games 'games of chance', as that means they have to comply with the regulation. https://www.gamingcommission.be/opencms/opencms/jhksweb_en/law/ https://www.gamingcommission.be/opencms/opencms/jhksweb_en/l...
- justonepost 8y agoBecause it preys on kids.
- nukeop 8y agoThat's why I'm asking why shouldn't it just be regulated like normal gambling and made inaccessible to kids.
- GyYZTfWBfQw 8y agoIf you give kids your credit card, then it is your fault. Really, have you ever considered actually paying attention to what your kid (assuming you have one, whatever) does instead of thinking that prohibition will solve the issue of negligence on your part? Can't wait for the down-voting of this post from salty parents.
- nukeop 8y agoSmartphones/tablets are now being used as pacifiers for older children, you give them a brainless game to play in a cafe or a restaurant so they shut up and you can stop paying attention to them so you can play with your smartphone at peace.
- DanBC 8y agoThe salty parents would ask why you think it's ok to oppressively surveil everything that your child does, and say that you should be able to leave your child playing a game without risking exposing the child to tobaco, alcohol, ro gambling ads.
- GyYZTfWBfQw 8y agoFor the same reason you are perfectly fine with government surveillance and prohibition aggressively enforced by the State. Just stop giving your kids money, or pay more attention to their spending habits. If you think attention to your kid is oppressive surveillance, then there is no hope for you. Apparently children are oppressed by their parents' attention and they are suddenly capable of looking after themselves, yet at the same time you are in favor of prohibition of in-game loot crates because children are not capable of looking after themselves, but you also can't look after them because that would be oppressive. The cognitive dissonance is real.
