Next, the US will try to adopt the metric system (again).
- toephu2 8y agoand they should. Also please get rid of DST while you are at it.
- bsder 8y agoThe US has a bit of an oddity in the law: "The federal government controls the nation’s time zones, as well as the start and end dates of daylight saving time. States can choose to exempt themselves from daylight saving time — Arizona and Hawaii do — but nothing in federal law allows them to exempt themselves from standard time." Florida is attempting to be on DST all year round.
- jsgo 8y agoI wish we would. Conversions would be so much simpler.
- Lionsion 8y ago> I wish we would. Conversions would be so much simpler. Not really, and you'd have to do it more frequently. The US already has a standard, and a lot of existing stuff built to it. Adopting the metric system isn't going to change the size of the pipes in my house's plumbing, the units in my recipes and cookbooks, etc.
- Symbiote 8y agoMy grandma's (British) cookbooks have pounds and ounces [1]. My mother's have grams, and ounces in brackets. Mine only have grams. There's little reason to convert a recipe in any case, assuming you won't forget how to use "English" units. [1] Different sizes to yours, naturally. At least the fluid ones.
- jsgo 8y agoat the most basic: 1 kilometer is 1000 meters 1 kiloliter is 1000 liters etc. 1 mile is 1760 yards 1 foot is 12 inches 1 gallon is 4 quarts etc. dunno, seems simpler to me.
- JoeAltmaier 8y agoWith factors of 2,3 and 4 its actually easier to deal with English than metric. A third of a meter? Good luck.
- efrafa 8y agoHow is calculating 1/3 of 100cm an issue? Im living on California for 2 years and imperial system still make no sense to me :)
- Lionsion 8y ago> dunno, seems simpler to me. Cheeky. You're missing the point. When you change between systems you're going to have to do conversions like: 1 mile is ~1.61 kilometers 1 foot is 0.3048 meters 1 gallon is ~3.79 liters Doesn't seem all that much simpler. Switching doesn't improve conversions as much as you'd think. If the US metricated, I'd have to do a lot more conversions in my everyday life, because, at present, I hardly do any between US units.
- TomK32 8y agoHaha, I was about to write the same, including the "again" :)
