There's an Economist article about how the spending habits of the rich people have shifted over time in the US.
Today, they spend less money (in relative terms) on fancy cars and watches, and more money on things that are less visible but more (what they consider) valuable: kids' education, hiring private chefs and maids (because they tend to be time-strapped), luxury gym membership with personal trainer, etc.
