That friendly box that was the original Macintosh retailed for $2,495 in 1984 dollars. You can get a MacBook Air for $999 in 2018 dollars.
- michrassena 9y agoAccording to the inflation calculator the original Macintosh cost the equivalent of 6,068 of today's dollars.
- kurthr 9y agoAnd don't forget the cost of a Lisa to do any development! At least those came with a HD.
- tokyodude 9y agothat's really irrelevant when PC notebooks can had for $200-$300. That means that not well off are not going to be chosing macs
- nsxwolf 9y agoThe existence of even cheaper computers does not make my point irrelevant. A larger proportion of the population can afford a Mac today than in 1984, and an even larger proportion still can afford a computer of any sort.
- abritinthebay 9y agoCheap PC notebooks are really irrelevant when comparing with the Mac. A computer of the era that would compare with those would be a C64 or an Atari 800XL which were ~$300 then. Mac's were pretty top of the line at the time (too much so in many ways, which raised the price). They'd be comparable to a high-end desktop now.
- Fnoord 9y agoApple go for the top segments. Perhaps some mid. Its part of their premium brand recognition. Whether that is still relevant these days, for every product, is another debate.
- intrasight 9y agoCollege students (I was a freshman) got it for $999
