The possibility of being reunited with their family in the South perhaps? Or maybe a slow transition away from the dictatorship that created those camps in favor of a democracy? Or even foreign aid once their government is no longer openly hostile?
Sure, they can't eat peace, but it's the first step towards healing the peninsula.
- atomical 8y agoDemocracy? You must be joking. What possible benefit could Kim Jong Un receive for making that change?
- toyg 8y agoWhat benefits were gained by DeKlerk dropping Apartheid? Or by the British politicians finally giving up India? Sometimes people just realise they cannot carry on like before. After their silly missile antics, SK is diplomatically isolated (Kim being “recalled” in Beijing a few weeks ago was a big sign that things were in motion). They have escalated as much as they can realistically do, and it went nowhere; so they might as well give up and try other roads. Besides, China has bigger fish to fries with disputed straits etc, so they are probably tired to subsidise the erratic leadership of an impoverished peripheral fiefdom.

- pluto9 8y agoIt's hard for anyone on the outside (like us) to say, but that doesn't mean there isn't any. What benefit did Than Shwe receive by stepping down as Prime Minister of Burma? That act pretty much ended the military dictatorship that existed there for decades. Strong-man governments do occasionally dissolve themselves voluntarily. Shame it doesn't happen more often, but it does happen.
