It does require commitment to keep track of the transactions regularly, but ultimately gnucash is really a great help for me as well. I don't keep a detailed track of every petty cash expenses (just input an adjustment for the "cash" asset account each month based on what is left in my wallet), but based on the monthly bank statements most of the expenses are already covered anyway.
