In JupyterLab (http://jupyterlab.readthedocs.io/en/stable/ http://jupyterlab.readthedocs.io/en/stable/), this is built-in. Just right click a notebook and choose "New Console for Notebook".
JupyterLab is in beta and is intended to replace the current Jupyter front-end.
