Antibiotics used in animal agriculture dwarf the quantities directly used to treat humans. I didn't read ianai as saying that veganism protects against disease, but saying "screw you" to livestock producers and their customers, who are risking these lifesaving drugs' efficacy in pursuit of lower-cost food from animals.
- ianai 9y agoI’m glad somebody got it. I’m fine leaving people be up to the point where their practices produce externalities which threaten or actively hurt me. Second hand and even third hand smoke are taken seriously and societal risk from overuse of antibiotics should be too.
- candiodari 9y agoI don't get it. So veganism is supposed to prevent this from happening how ? It happened. If your veganism was an attempt at preventing antibiotics resistance, it completely failed. And if the message is "it happened but I'm not to blame (and, implicitly, YOU are)" then all I'm going to say is ... I hope you enjoy it, because there is nothing that matters less. You're like a WWI soldier pointing out that he never shot any Austrian duke, as if that will stop a single bullet.
